NEC or NESC? Your category decides.
An administrator must complete at least one 8-hour CE course covering the code that applies to each category of license held:
| Administrator category | Required code |
|---|---|
| Inside Communications (IC) | NEC |
| Unlimited Commercial Wiring (UCW) | NEC |
| Controls & Control Wiring (CNTL) | NEC |
| Residential Wiring (RW) | NEC |
| Outside Communications (OC) | NESC |
| Unlimited Linework (UL) | NESC |
If you hold an Outside Communications or Unlimited Linework category, your 8 hours must cover the NESC.

A common question
What about a Master or Supervising license?
Alaska doesn't issue separate "master" or "supervising electrician" state licenses the way some Lower-48 states do. The structure is Electrical Administrator (Commerce) plus Certificates of Fitness (Labor). If a form or employer requests your "license," it's almost certainly one of these two — start by identifying which agency issued it.
Before you renew
Common mistakes to avoid
Completing the wrong code
Outside-Communications and Unlimited-Linework administrators require NESC, not NEC. Confirm your category before purchasing.
Waiting until the renewal year
CE finished after January 1 of your renewal year can't be reused next cycle.
Letting the license lapse
No grace period — you can't legally work the day after expiration.
Not keeping your certificate
Renewals are randomly audited; retain proof for four years.
